Why It’s Time to Talk About the Toll of Inefficient Vetting
Anyone with experience in the Security industry is guaranteed to have experienced some consequence of inefficient or insufficient vetting. From providers taking up to a whopping 52 days to clear candidates, to failing audits due to poor compliance practices. This major pain point of the industry seems to have us going around in the endless evil cycle of paying too much, waiting too long and not even being sure if the effort put into screening candidates to BS7858 will hold up in an audit.
So why is no one talking about the toll inefficient vetting is taking on the security industry? It’s time to talk about the non-compliant elephant in the room.
As a tech company, Deploi wants to combat slow and untrustworthy vetting. Before we can do this, we need to get the full picture of exactly how much havoc it’s causing, and how we can start to manage it better, and that’s exactly what this blog outlines.
Some of our central findings include:
It’s not as straightforward as slow vetting making candidates wait to get into work. Inefficient vetting can have huge effects on staff morale. It’s how they shape their opinion of you, it affects their likelihood to refer friends, and frequently leads to them dropping out to find other work.
There’s an issue here around balancing compliance with quick vetting, as it can quickly become a race to the bottom. This is when it’s important to remember the potential cost of using those providers that promise guaranteed pass rates, or turnaround time of 24 hours. Do you have the time to review each file in the way an auditor would? Do you have the in-depth BS7858 knowledge to be comfortable raising a concern?
The introduction of Martyn’s Law is imminent, and quite rightly so. There is going to be increased scrutiny on background checking, and finding these questionable files late on will risk your ability to fill contracts, your reputation and your insurance validity.
In my previous role at Orka, we initially outsourced vetting, and I recall many times when we needed a candidate urgently, so emailed to chase where they were up to. The responses we received always included that candidate being miraculously cleared just after we contacted them. This is happening every day with some of the biggest names in the industry, and all it does is roll the dice with your credibility.
At Deploi we wanted to be different. We never promise things we can’t achieve. Our tech roots have enabled us to implement agile working methods into our screening processes. Through this we’ve created a culture of continuous improvement and optimisation. This is a significant factor in how we’ve managed to get our average checking time down to 4.5 days: by finding inefficiencies and rooting them out, for good.
One of the biggest ways we’ve done this touches on that last statistic. 41% of your candidates have already been screened. That’s why we created the Deploi passport, to ensure that the same data can be reverified, topped up, then reused. With 0ver 43,000 candidates already in the system, you can be sure we’re doing everything we can to cut down that time to screen without compromising compliance.
Deploi: Lowering the barrier, not the bar.
